My research focuses on the cultural dynamics of national identity, typically pointing to its relative autonomy from global flows. Most commonly my scholarship has involved studies of ‘eventful moments’, including analysis of the lived experience, public sphere narration and collective remembering of disaster, war and terrorism. As an Australian scholar I commonly set out to advance the discipline through examining the Australian condition, however, the dialogical focus of my research has also seen me frequently undertake international research, including extensive fieldwork projects in Turkey, Vietnam, Tonga and the United States. In recent years I have been an advocate for the development of a ‘strong’ research program on the complex interconnections between the military and the civil sphere.
