Celso Villegas

Celso M. Villegas is Associate Professor of Sociology at Kenyon College. Trained in comparative historical analysis, he has published on middle-class formation and democracy in the Philippines, Ecuador, and Venezuela. His more recent work explores the meanings of social class, ritual and political performance in the U.S., and civil sphere theory around the world. In 2025, he began a term as Kenyon’s National Endowment for the Humanities Distinguished Teaching Professor at Kenyon College, with a project to synthesize literary postcriticism with cultural sociology.

Villegas received his B.A. in Sociology from Connecticut College and his M.A. and Ph.D in Sociology from Brown University. He was a CCS Visiting Fellow in Spring 2017.
