Daniel Smith is Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. He teaches and researches in the field of cultural sociology, and has published on various topics in this area, including the sociology of class, comedy and modernity, literature and reading practices, celebrity and social media, as well as romantic love. He is the author of Comedy & Critique (2018), as well as Elites, Race and Nationhood: The Branded Gentry (2016), and The Fall and Rise of the English Upper Class: Houses, kinship and capital since 1945 (2023). His work has appeared in the American Journal of Cultural Sociology, where he is an Associate Editor, and he participated in the CCS Workshop 2024/25, where he delivered a paper on the sociology of fate and destiny.
