Filippa Flaherty is a PhD Student in Sociology at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Drawing on cultural sociological perspectives, Filippa’s research focuses on the processes of meaning-making and identity in subcultures, deviance, and stigmatization. Filippa’s dissertation project explores how drag participants construct group identities, gender, and how they manage stigma. Utilizing an ethnographic method, Filippa examines how these themes are performed and narrated within the culture, how and why such constructions become meaningful, and what consequences they have. Furthermore, the project focuses on stigmatization processes directed toward drag culture and how drag artists negotiate their identities in relation to broader cultural narratives.
