Jessie Dong is a PhD Candidate in Sociology at Yale University and Junior Fellow at the Yale Center for Cultural Sociology. Her work has been published in Cultural Sociology, Thesis Eleven, Emotions and Society, and The American Journal of Cultural Sociology. Her research centers on questions of cultural power through the umbrella case studies of popular culture and emotions. Her work in popular culture theorizes the cultural power of cinema, documentary, and hip hop. Her work on emotions centers on theorizing the cultural structure of romantic love. While theoretical in orientation, her research is based in empirical investigations via ethnography and in-depth interviews. She is currently developing a public sociology project in the form of a docuseries about battle rap subculture.
