Malcolm Jacobson is a cultural sociologist studying collective memories, subcultures, and materialities. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Stockholm University. His dissertation, Still Writing: Subcultural Graffiti, Aging, and Digital Memory Work, explored how Swedish graffiti writers use digital media to collectively negotiate the meanings of aging in a subculture associated with youth. In addition to his academic work, Jacobson is a nonfiction writer and photographer with a focus on minority communities. His current research explores how meanings of secularity and individualism are negotiated through funeral rituals, and how conflicts over visual artworks shape public discourse around freedom of expression, identities, and moral boundaries.
