Matteo Bortolini (PhD, University of Bologna, 2000) is associate professor of sociology at the Department of Historical and Geographical Sciences and the Ancient World of the University of Padova, Italy. Matteo’s work focuses mainly on the historical sociology of ideas and intellectuals, the theory of biography, and social theory. His major project so far has been a biography of the late American sociologist, Robert Bellah, published in 2021 under the title A Joyfully Serious Man (Princeton UP). He is now working on a similar book on Clifford Geertz as a way to explore the relationship between temporality, iconicity, and the institutional and intellectual trajectories of academic scholars. Matteo has published in Theory and SocietyIntellectual History ReviewMinervaHistory and Anthropology, European Journal of Social Theory, and other journals, and enjoyed fellowships at Harvard, Berkeley, Boston University, the University of Erfurt, and the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine.
