Muyang Li is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at York University. She is interested in digital media, cultural sociology, political sociology, and gender issues. With an interdisciplinary background in sociology, computational social science, and communication, she has been trained in a variety of methodological approaches. Her research is organized around a key question: how does media interact with democracy and social life? One of her recent studies adopts mixed methods to explore the negotiation between the authoritarian state and the public in defining democracy through social media. The findings reveal how the authoritarian regime uses hegemonic strategies to survive the ideological crisis in the digital era. She is also working on projects about social media platform’s content moderation, and algorithm’s impact on political discourse. Her research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation.
