Runya Qiaoan is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna, and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University. Her scholarly interests are civil sphere theory, sociology of emotions, and how the two can be combined to decode the evolving civil sphere in China. She is the author of Civil Society in China: How Society Speaks to the State (Routledge, 2021), and her work has been published in journals including Social Movement StudiesJournal of Chinese Political Science, and Philosophy & Social Criticism. Since February 2025, she has been conducting research under the MSCA Fellowship CZ, investigating the Chinese civil sphere through the lenses of cultural sociology and sociology of emotions, with a particular focus on youth subcultural movements and their impact on social norms.
