Yingyu Zang is a Ph.D. student at the sociology department of the University of Virginia. His research interests broadly lie in cultural sociology and social theory. His work on cultural currents among Gen Z explores the intertwining relationship of cultural symbols and self/subjects in modern societies. In this chain, language functions as our agent sent to the world, then thrown back to ourselves by the big other, constitutes the foundation of self. His efforts in research interrogate “who we really are” beneath the claim of “who we are” in everyday life.
