Sumrin Kalia is a political sociologist and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Free University of Berlin. Her research examines civil society and political culture from a comparative, socio-historical perspective. Specifically, she studies linkages between political parties, social movements, and civil society organizations. Methodologically, she combines ethnographic insights and qualitative data with comparative case studies to understand how organizational dynamics within the civil society respond to, and influence, cultural, political, and economic institutions. Her work has appeared in journals such as Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society, Religion, State and Society etc. She has also co-edited two books and is currently working on her book analysing how populist movements shape civil society. The book is tentatively titled: Imagining Madina: Repertoires of Populism in Pakistan.
