Jeffrey Alexander ~ Fall break in Scotland

Jeffrey Alexander is spending a very busy 10 days in Scotland this month.

Last week he was hosted at the University of Edinburgh Department of Sociology by M. Angélica Thumala Olave. While there, Jeff gave a Masterclass,  Doing research with the strong programme in cultural sociology; took part in the The Sociology of Now: Cultural explanations of Brexit, Trump, and (not) Marikana, a conversation with David Inglis (University of Helsinki), and Liz Stanley (University of Edinburgh); gave the Goffman Memorial Lecture: “The Societalization of Social Problems:  Church Pedophilia, Financial Crisis, and Media Phone Hacking;” and caught up with CCS Faculty Fellow and founding alumna Lisa McCormick.

This week he is at the University of Aberdeen, Centre for Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law (CISRUL), giving a Research Seminar, Iconic Objects and the New Middle Class;  a reading based discussion, Civil Sphere Theory: An Interdisciplinary Debate; and a Public Lecture, The Societalization of Social Problems: Financial Crisis and Media Phone Hacking

To top that all off, Jeff has coordinated, along with academic collaborators Farhad Khosrokhavar and Trevor Stack, the third of his Civil Sphere theory (CST) Globalization conference and book projects, “The Civil Sphere and Radicalization,” hosted by Centre for Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law (CISRUL) at the University of Aberdeen from October 2oth to the 22nd.
