TedX Talk by CCS Faculty Fellow Erik Hannerz

CCS Faculty Fellow Erik Hannerz has a new TedX talk, “Are graffiti and punk the best schools for entrepreneurs?

A society that wants to fight inequality and segregation has a lot to gain from recognizing competence gained from tagging subway trains, dealing drugs, or running a punk record company. In his provocative talk, speaker PhD Erik Hannerz introduces some of the people he has followed in his sociology research, showing how the magic of subcultures and the feeling of not fitting in can be an advantage. Many skills can be achieved from being “out of line”, and as he explains, designing letters while looking out for approaching trains and cops, is just one way that subcultural learning can land you a great job.

Erik Hannerz is a senior lecturer in Sociology at Lund University, and faculty fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology. His research interests focus on subcultural theory, cultural criminology, and urban ethnography.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
